Advanced Micro Devices Inc. unveiled its first product featuring technology from ATI Technologies, the former darling of the Canadian computer industry it acquired last year.
AMD, the second-largest chip maker in the world after Intel Corp., announced the launch of its new 690 series chipset at an event in San Francisco on Wednesday, calling it the first platform to feature an ATI graphics chip.
The U.S.-based chip maker completed its $5.4-billion US takeover of ATI last year with an eye toward developing a more integrated product and catching market leader Intel.
Chipsets are vital links in personal computers, connecting the processor with memory and input/output ports. Adding an integrated graphics chip means PC users won't need a separate graphics card.
Engineers at the former headquarters of ATI in Markham, Ont., developed the new 690 series chipset using ATI's X1250 graphics chip. PC users who want to upgrade their graphics can still purchase an additional graphics card if they wish.
The chipset can handle high-definition formats like HD DVD and Blu-ray as well as HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) video, which allows digital video and audio to travel uncompressed from one device to another, such as from a computer to a television, through a set-top box.
