Pfizer Canada said Tuesday it will cut 285 jobs over the next six months as part of a company-wide restructuring announced last week.

The Canadian arm of Pfizer Inc. said the cuts will hit all areas of its business, from head office to field employees.

"We have undertaken a comprehensive review of every aspect of our business to determine the steps we need to take to position Pfizer for future success," said Jean-Michel Halfon, the president of Pfizer Canada, in a release.

"This exercise has forced us to rethink how we do things, how we prioritize and how we allocate resources in order to better meet the needs of an evolving health-care market," he said.

Pfizer employs about 1,500 people in Canada, the bulk of them at its Canadian headquarters in the Montreal suburb of Kirkland.

On Jan. 22, Pfizer Inc. said it would eliminate 10,000 jobs over the next two years as it seeks to cut its costs by $2 billion US a year in the face of growing competition from generic drugs.
