Vancouver-area commuters now have two free daily papers offering a quick info hit on the way to work – and a third is expected.

On Tuesday, 24 Hours, produced by the Jim Pattison Group and Quebecor Inc. subsidiary Sun Media Corp., hit the market. It joins the handout scene just two weeks after the Metro, produced by CanWest Global and partners, came to town.

"I've always believed that competition is good for consumers and good for businesses. Now, for the first time in many years, the Lower Mainland has a viable alternative daily paper written and produced locally and focusing on news that's important to residents in the region," said Jim Pattison, chairman and CEO of the Jim Pattison Group.

The publishers say the paper will include news, sports, fashion, business and entertainment. It is edited locally and printed by Quebecor World in Vancouver.

"The 24 Hours concept has been extremely popular in Montreal and Toronto," said Sun Media President Pierre Francoeur. "We have found that readers really want quick-read daily newspapers that tell them what's happening locally, nationally and internationally without forcing them to spend hours wading through news that's less important."

The company plans to publish five days a week and distribute the paper through boxes and stores in key Lower Mainland locations.

In addition to Metro, also a concise tabloid, the CanWest group is planning another free daily to target younger readers.

Vancouver is already served by CanWest Global's two paid dailies, the Province and the Vancouver Sun, as well as several free weeklies focusing on specific market niches.
