Pharmaceutical company Biovail Corp. is planning a $27.6-million investment in its manufacturing plant in Steinbach, Man., the company said.

Construction at the plant, which makes the company's popular antidepressant Wellbutrin XL and the heart drug Cardizem LA, is expected to begin this spring.

Biovail said the plant is being expanded to meet growing demand.

"Furthermore, we believe this expansion will enhance Biovail's ability to attract and retain talented people by fortifying our reputation as an employer of choice," said company CEO Douglas Squires.

Growth in Wellbutrin and Cardizem has meant employment at the plant has almost doubled to 550 people over the past 18 months.

"As might be expected, our recent growth is again straining our infrastructure," said John Sebben, the company's vice-president of global manufacturing.

Biovail shares lost 20 cents to $20.42 Tuesday.
