The Toronto Blue Jays baseball club is buying SkyDome, its home park, for $25 million.

The price the Rogers Communications-owned ball club is paying is a fraction of the $600 million it cost to build the domed stadium, which opened in 1989. Much of the building cost was financed through taxpayer money.

"The purchase of SkyDome is an opportunity for us to acquire a tremendous asset at an extremely attractive price, but more importantly, we will now have significantly better control over our product and the fan experience," said Paul Godfrey, president and CEO of the Blue Jays.

The deal is expected to close next month.

The Blue Jays will buy the SkyDome from Sportsco International, a U.S.-based limited partnership, which bought the stadium out of bankruptcy six years ago.

Rogers Communications share were off 12 cents at $28.68 on the TSX.
