The job-cutting axe swung at Sun Media again on Wednesday as the newspaper company eliminated 125 jobs.

The company said it is consolidating the business operations of its Bowes Publishing division, which publishes over 190 weeklies and community dailies, with those of its metropolitan dailies.

In addition, Sun Media said it will cease publication of its free Toronto daily commuter tabloid FYI Toronto.

The company said it expects to save $10 million a year with the cuts.

"Some administrative operations will be merged, enabling us to realize substantial efficiencies," Pierre Francoeur, the president and CEO of Sun Media Corporation, said in a release.

"The duplication of operations between Bowes and Sun was unwarranted, particularly in the current economic slowdown. More than ever, we need to practice taut and disciplined management," he said.

Francoeur also said that William Dempsey, the former CEO of Bowes Publishing, will become chief operating officer at Sun Media.

It marks the second time this year that Sun Media has cut staff. In May, the firm cut its payroll by 5 per cent, eliminating over 300 jobs.
