- By Michael Hlinka
By David Blair, CBC business columnist.
David Blair interviews Don Drummond, chief economist at TD Bank (air date: Dec 23).
Economists have never been so popular in Canada as they were over the past autumn. They were rock stars. Well, maybe that's going too far. Still, they are the ones with smarts to help us navigate these rough economic times. CBC business reproter David Blair speaks to Don Drummond, chief economist at the TD Bank, about his front-row seat to the meltdown of a generation.

Economists, "Rock Stars"?...wrong term, in my view. People tend to want an answer and before falling back on God or divination, they tend to go to where they think they can get visibility or insight.
Don Drummond is a good speaker, tells a story well and doesn't talk down from the pulpit like most economists.
The fiction of 'poor productivity' in Canada is troubling though and it's all in the measures. Economists can't adapt measures to suit changing circumstances, otherwise their would be Entrepreneurs or ....Politicians.
Nothing against Don, but PLEEEEASE let's look at the Canadian economy with a different lens than south of the border. It is interesting to me that in a recent CBC Radio interview Ted Rogers called Americans a mean spirited society related to how they treat people.
Productivity is great but not if you only benefit the rich or the suppliers of the software, harware and armaments that make up the 'productivity' calculation.
We have brilliant people here and a friend of mine at www.kikm.org may help Don with different measures of productivity.
Cheers,
Nick
