The Globe and Mail says it's cutting 18 positions while the National Post has cut its newsroom by six positions.

The cuts at Postmedia, owner of the National Post, were on top of 48 layoffs in its classified advertising centre in Calgary announced Monday.

Publisher Phillip Crawley says the Globe cuts were necessary to offset revenue declines and come cost-saving measures, such as reduction in travel, renegotiating service contracts and delivery changes.

The affected employees will be formally notified on Feb. 5 with reductions determined through a collective agreement with its union. Nine jobs will be eliminated from the newsroom, Crawley said.

Other departments affected include advertising and circulation.

Postmedia is closing its classified advertising call centre in Calgary, and outsourcing the work, as part of its strategy to lower expenses and focus more on other priorities, which include its digital business.
