Shortly after the September 11 terrorist attacks, air traffic across the United States was closed. Many trans-Atlantic flights destined for U.S. cities were forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland and the passengers found themselves stranded.
But the people of Newfoundland were quick to respond, preparing food, setting up shelters in schools and churches, some even inviting strangers into their homes.
The hospitality was not forgotten. Many of the stranded passengers have kept in touch with the new friends they met.
CBC News Online has put together a photo gallery of pictures as well as two clips of passengers grateful for the hospitality they've been shown. And in the right-hand column there are links to various Web sites passengers have set up to share their experiences.
