  • There are 25.9 million Sikhs worldwide, according to the 2006 Encyclopaedia Britannica. This accounts for 0.4 per cent of the world's population.
  • The faith is practised in 33 of 238 countries around the world.
  • Most Sikhs live in India, and less than a million are outside of Asia. Of these 614,000 live in North America.
  • According to the 2001 census, 278,410 Canadians identify themselves as practising Sikhs.
  • That's about one per cent of the total population, roughly the same number of people who identify themselves as being Buddhist, Jewish or Hindu.
  • The number of Sikhs in Canada rose by 88 per cent between 1991 and 2001.
  • Almost half of all Canadian Sikhs live in British Columbia.
  • According to the census, there were no practising Sikhs in Nunavut or Prince Edward Island.
