CBC News Online | July 8, 2005
- The London Underground, known as the Tube, consists of 12 subway lines. Its history dates back to 1863 with the opening of the Metropolitan Line.
- It's the world's oldest subway system, and the longest, with 408 kilometres of track. The Central Line is the longest, at 74 kilometres serving 49 stations.
- The network has a staff of 12,000 that moves about three million passengers a day. The Northern Line alone transports over 600,000 people on a weekday.
- It costs £1.70, or about $3.50 Cdn, for a one-way trip in the downtown area. Costs are slightly higher in the suburban areas.
- The London Underground is one of the world's deepest systems. It descends to its lowest point under Hampstead Heath in North London at 67 metres. Hampstead is the deepest station at 58 metres.
- Despite the name, most of the Underground isn't underground. Most of the train system runs aboveground in London's suburban areas.
