Canada and the EU

Canada formally established relations with the European Union in 1976 with the signing of the Canada-EU Framework Agreement. According to Foreign Affairs Canada, "Canada is the only country besides the U.S. to participate in regular trans-Atlantic meetings on immigration, asylum, organized crime and judicial cooperation." The two sides meet twice yearly at a trade and investment meeting known as the Canada-Europe Round Table (CERT).

TRADE:

EU group of states constitute Canada's largest trading partner after the U.S. The EU also provides Canada with the greatest amount of direct foreign investment after the U.S ($85 billion in 2000).

Canada imports from EU (2003): $46.0 billion (11.2 per cent of total Canadian imports)
