Donald Tsang was named chief executive of Hong Kong by China's State Council in June 2005. Tsang was formerly Hong Kong's chief secretary, ranking second to the chief executive. Tsang was also a member of the Executive Council, the highest policy-making body in Hong Kong, and has spent 38 years in public service. Tsang was the acting leader of Hong Kong after former chief executive Tung Chee-hwa announced his departure in March 2005.

1967:
Joined the civil service and held many positions dealing with local administration, finance, trade and policies relating to the return of Hong Kong to China. Educated in Hong Kong and holds a master's degree in public administration from Harvard University.

1977:
Joined the Asian Development Bank in Manila and worked on water supply and railway development projects in the Philippines and Bangladesh.

1985:
Appointed deputy secretary of the General Duties Branch.

1991:
Appointed director general of trade, responsible for all facets of trade negotiation and administration affecting Hong Kong.

1993:
Promoted to secretary for the treasury, responsible for the overall resource allocation, taxation systems and cost effectiveness of the Hong Kong government.

1995:
Appointed financial secretary, the first Chinese to hold the position after 150 years of British incumbents. He served during the Asian financial crisis of 1997 and 1998.

2001:
Appointed Hong Kong's chief secretary.

2005:
China's State Council appoints Tsang as chief executive of Hong Kong, after the resignation of Tung Chee-hwa.
