INDEPTH: CECILIA ZHANG
Open letter from mother
October 26, 2003
Nine-year-old Cecilia Zhang was taken from her Toronto home in the middle of the night. Her parents discovered her missing Monday morning, Oct. 20, 2003.
On Oct. 26, 2003, Cecilia's mother Sherry Xu published a letter in three Chinese newspapers in Toronto (the Sing Tao, Ming Pao and World Journal) pleading for her daughter's safe return.
The following is a translation by Sing Tao reporter Henry Liu, provided by the Canadian Press:
To whomever took Cecilia, please listen:
Are you listening? I'm Cecilia's mother.
In these five, long, blackest nights of my life, I know you have been beside her.
Until today, I still don't know who you are.
Why you are so angry as to separate mother from daughter, and make me pass, one by one, five sleepless and tearful nights?
Maybe you are a parent, maybe you are just a young kid.
I believe you must know someone who misses their beloved and also misses freedom.
You should be able to understand the pain caused by the loss of a beloved and loss of freedom.
Why do you burden Cecilia with this?
Cecilia is innocent.
Maybe you are acting on impulse, maybe it's a misunderstanding.
Please put Cecilia in a safe place and let her come home herself. This is the most ideal ending of this case.
Whoever you are, you have given me a new perspective on my own life and brought me to reconsider my life and my character from a personal angle.
I don't seek retribution and I won't bring this to the courts.
I am begging you, release my Cecilia.
