Issues: Environment
CBC News Online | March 23, 2004
Ottawa has earmarked hundreds of millions of dollars to clean up contaminated sites across the country over the next decade.
Finance Minister Ralph Goodale said in his budget that $350 million of the money will go to sites for which the federal government is solely responsible. Goodale called it the largest environmental investment made by any government.
The bulk of the money about 60 per cent will be spent to clean up sites in the north.
Ottawa is currently responsible for about 3,800 contaminated sites.
Another $500 million is designated for cleaning up sites where the responsibility is shared between Ottawa and other groups.
The federal government said an immediate priority will be to negotiate responsibilities for the cleanup of the tar ponds in Sydney, N.S. Those negotiations will be with the government of Nova Scotia, the city and the residents of the area.
