Here are some of the major findings reported by Auditor General Sheila Fraser over the past year:

April 16, 2002:
Fraser says the federal government gives billions of dollars to foundations to provide public services, but has almost no control over how the money is spent. She also criticizes Treasury Board for abusing its discretionary spending powers, especially to pay $95 million to airlines after Sept. 11.

  • FROM APRIL 16, 2002: Ottawa's arms-length spending worries auditor

    May 8, 2002:
    The auditor general calls for an RCMP investigation of $1.6 million worth of contracts to the Groupaction ad agency, saying senior Public Works Department officials "broke just about every rule in the book" handing out the contracts.

  • FROM MAY 9, 2002: Auditor general refers Liberal contracts to RCMP for investigation

    Oct. 8, 2002:
    Fraser says the federal government doesn't do enough to make sure the provinces follow the rules for spending federal health care money.

  • FROM OCT. 9, 2002: Auditor general says Ottawa ignorant of health care spending

    Dec. 2, 2002:
    The auditor general says the Chrétien government hid the true cost of the federal gun registry from Parliament and the public. She reveals that the cost is expected to top $1 billion.

  • FROM DEC. 4, 2002: Ottawa accused of hiding true cost of gun registry
