Total amount donated for relief efforts in South Asia by countries around the world according to the United Nations. UN humanitarian chief Jan Egeland said the amount exceeded donations promised for all other humanitarian appeals by the UN in 2004 combined.

$5.7 billion US
The G-7 countries, including Canada, have proposed an immediate suspension of debt repayments by the countries hit by the tsunami. The World Bank says the affected countries owe $356 billion US, led by Indonesia’s $132 billion US foreign debt. Britain’s treasury chief estimates that a freeze in debt repayments would be worth a least $5.7 billion US a year.

$425 million
Aid donated by Canada's federal government. This amount is up from the $80 million promised in early January.

$93 million
Amount donated so far by Canadians to non-governmental organizations such as the Canadian Red Cross.

$18.5 million
Aid donated by Canada's provincial and territorial governments.

$1 billion
The amount Australia announced it would give Indonesia, half in grants for short-term relief and half in loans for long-term rebuilding and recovery efforts.

$1.1 billion
Amount donated by the World Bank and Asia Bank of Development for relief efforts.

$432 million
Amount pledged by the U.S., although Secretary of State Colin Powell says the U.S. will add more if it is needed.

$117 million
Aid promised by the British. Prime Minister Tony Blair has promised to increase the U.K.'s contribution to "several hundred million pounds."

$316 million
How much it will cost to provide food to some two million people in areas hit by the tsunamis for the next six months, according to the UN World Food Program.

$12.5 million
The largest individual donation recorded so far, by German Formula One racer Michael Schumacher.
