Capt. Nichola Goddard (DND)
Capt. Nichola Goddard of Shilo, Man., died in a military operation against Taliban forces south of Kandahar around 6:55 p.m. local time.
Goddard was serving in Afghanistan with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. Before that she was stationed with the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery in Shilo.
Goddard was the first woman in Canadian history killed in a combat role and the first female member of the Canadian military killed in combat since the Second World War.
