Radio-Canada, Al-Jazeera vie for world Emmys

News and current affairs reportage by Radio-Canada, Qatar-based Al-Jazeera English and the U.K.'s Sky News are among those in the running for the prestigious International Emmy Awards.
Organizers announced eight nominees, by news organizations from seven countries around the globe, in New York on Wednesday.
Radio-Canada, CBC's French-language counterpart, is a nominee in the current affairs category for "The Ultimate Forgiveness," which aired on weekly newsmagazine show Enquête.
The report explored the aftermath of a horrific 2006 shooting at an Amish school in a small Pennsylvania town and why the community made the surprising decision to immediately forgive the killer (who had turned the gun on himself).
Also nominated in the same category are:
- Tuesday Report: "Child Abduction," Television Broadcasts Limited (Hong Kong, China).
- Dispatches: "Pakistan's Taliban Generation," October Film for Channel 4 (United Kingdom).
- Telenoche: "Glaciers, The First Veto," Artear-Canal 13 (Argentina).
Coverage of increasing Taliban forces in Pakistan, U.S. President Barack Obama's Russian trip, a massive and revealing power outage in Brazil and the Israel-Hamas Gaza War in January 2009 are the finalists in the news category.
- News Hour: Gaza War, Al-Jazeera English (Qatar).
- "Pakistan —Terrors' Front Line," Sky News (United Kingdom).
- News: Extended: Coverage of Obama's Visit to Russia, RT Channel (Russia).
- Jornal Nacional: Blackout in Brazil, TV Globo (Brazil).
The International Emmys, which celebrate excellence in television produced outside the U.S., are administered by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The group comprises representatives from more than 50 countries.
This year's nominees "offer a fascinating window into the human drama constantly unfolding around the world in conflict zones, politics or even daily life," Bruce L. Paisner, president and CEO of the academy, said in a statement.
"We congratulate them for their outstanding achievements in television reporting."
The winners will be announced during a gala on Sept. 27 in New York.
