Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler has told People magazine he is "probably" going to join the judges' panel for a new season of American Idol.

In a concert Saturday in Las Vegas, Tyler joked that the Idol rumours were true and he was in talks with Fox to join the reality TV show.

Tyler and singer Jennifer Lopez have been rumoured to be filling the judges' chairs but the Fox network says it is not yet ready to make an announcement.

Fox chairman Peter Rice held a press conference in Beverly Hills, Calif., Monday as part of the TV critics tour and dismissed speculation about Idol judges as "accurate" to "wildly inaccurate." He did confirm that the show is seeking judges with a music-industry background.

Longtime judge Simon Cowell left American Idol at the end of the previous season, and last week talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres announced her departure, saying the show was "not a good fit."

There are also unconfirmed reports that Kara DioGuardi will be leaving the show.

Tyler has had an erratic few years with stints in rehab and other health problems. Aerosmith had to cancel a string of shows in summer 2009 after he fell off a stage, suffering a broken shoulder and needing several stitches to his head.

Concerts in Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver were among those cancelled.

If Tyler is signed to American Idol, he may be serving alongside Randy Jackson and former Idol judge Nigel Lythgoe.
