George Lucas's Lucasfilm Animation has announced it is developing a new Star Wars series that will be an animated comedy.

Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, creators and executive producers of Robot Chicken, which parodies Star Wars among many other subjects, have been recruited to work on the series.

Brendan Hay, who worked for The Daily Show, is on board as a writer for the series, described as a playful and irreverent show that will focus on minor characters from the Star Wars franchise.

It will be directed by Todd Grimes, who helmed Back at the Barnyard

"There are so many stories taking place in the Star Wars universe, and they don't all have to focus on the fate of the galaxy," Grimes said in a release Tuesday.

"We're looking at Star Wars from a new perspective; this will be a glimpse at how the rest of the galaxy is affected by the events of the saga. There's a lot of humour to be mined from that."

No start date was announced for the as-yet-untitled production.

Lucas Animation airs its Clone Wars animated series on the Cartoon Network. Green and Senreich also have close to ties to the network, but no TV deal was announced.
