CBC-TV's coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympics won five Geminis at an industry gala celebrating the best in news, sports, documentary and lifestyles television.

The trophies were handed out at a private bash in Toronto that recognized the public broadcaster for best sports analyst, feature segment, play-by-play announcer, reporting and live event.

The ceremony also gave three awards to CBC News: The Fifth Estate, including best series, direction and host, for Gillian Findlay.

Other winners Monday included CBC's The National for best newscast, CBC News: The Lens, for best documentary series, and Canwest's Holmes In New Orleans, which was named best lifestyle series.

Brian Williams was named best sports host for his Grey Cup pre-game coverage on TSN while Ambrose Price of the HGTV show, The Decorating Adventures of Ambrose Price, won best lifestyles host.

In June 2006, CTV News announced it would no longer participate in the Gemini Awards.

The network said the time involved in preparing entries for the prizes was not worth the trouble.

The Gemini gala for children's and youth, drama, and variety and comedy winners will be held Tuesday.

The ceremonies precede a televised gala that will take place Nov. 14 in Calgary and will be broadcast on Global and Showcase.

CTV's cop drama Flashpoint leads the race overall with a record 19 nominations. Citytv's dark comedy Less Than Kind leads the nominations among sitcoms with nine nods.
