Al Jazeera English nominated for Emmy

Al Jazeera English and Ukraine's INTER TV have both been nominated for International Emmys in the news category for their coverage of last summer's Russia-Georgia war over the breakaway province of South Ossetia.
TV networks from Britain, Brazil and Germany were also among the International Emmy nominees in the news and current affairs categories announced Thursday by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
Al Jazeera English, the Qatar-based satellite news channel, received nominations in both the news and current affairs categories for the second year in a row. INTER TV received the first nomination ever for a program from Ukraine in the news category.
Other nominees in the news category included Britain's ITV News for its coverage of the May 2008 earthquake in China's Sichuan province and Brazil's TV Globo for Jornal Nacional's "Eloa's Story" about a tragic hostage drama.
The plight of children was a theme that dominated the nominees in the current affairs category, which included Al Jazeera English's "Witness Special: Return to Nablus" about students in a boys' and girls' school coping with life under Israeli occupation.
Other nominees included:
- Britain's Channel 4 for Dispatches item "Saving Africa's Witch Children," which follows an Englishman's efforts to help children in Nigeria who have been branded as witches by evangelical pastors.
- Germany's Westdeutscher Rundfunk for "ARD exclusiv — Kindersklaven," a documentary about child slaves.
- Argentina's Eyeworks Cuatro Cabezas for "The Team — Babies Traffic," an expose about the widespread trafficking of infants in Misiones and Santiago del Estero provinces.
The international winners in the news and current affairs categories will be announced alongside their American news and documentary counterparts at an awards ceremony scheduled for Sept. 21 at the Frederick P. Rose Hall at the Time Warner Center in New York.
