Afghanada, Dragon Boys win Canadian screenwriting awards

CBC Radio series Afghanada and TV miniseries Dragon Boys won awards for best writing Monday evening at the Canadian Screenwriting Awards.
The Writers Guild of Canada gave out awards for excellence in screenwriting in nine categories as well as four special awards at a ceremony in Toronto.

Afghanada writers Jason Sherman, Adam Pettle and Greg Nelson won the best radio drama award for "Episode 12" in which a food aid mission turns into a quest for an elusive Taliban leader. Afghanada is a radio drama series about Canadian soldiers trying to survive in Kandahar.
Vancouver screenwriter Ian Weir, who also created the teen series Edgemount, won the award for best miniseries for Dragon Boys, a two-part drama about teens involved with Vancouver's Asian gangs.
CBC-TV comedy series This Hour Has 22 Minutes won the award for best variety show for an episode created by Kevin White. White and Mark Critch, Irwin Barker, Gavin Crawford, Gary Pearson, Jennifer Whalen, Carolyn Taylor, Albert Howell, Dave Nystrom, Geri Hall, Todd Allen and Tim McAuliffe are credited as writers.
Travis McDonald won the screenwriting award for best feature film for Normal, a 2007 release about four unrelated people trying to deal with the fallout of a tragic traffic accident.
Best drama series was Across the River to Motor City, written by Denis McGrath and Robert Wertheimer.
Other winners of screenwriting awards:
- Children: Iggy Arbuckle, "Petition Impossible" by Kenn Scott.
- Documentary: Toxic Trespass by Barri Cohen.
- Half-hour drama series: Corner Gas episode, "Seeing Things" by Mark Farrell and Robert Sheridan.
- Youth: Naturally Sadie, "In or Out of Africa," by Brent Piaskoski.
The awards were hosted by 22 Minutes comedian Crawford.
Peter Mohan, who created Blood Ties and Mutant X, was recognized for his leadership and creative vision with the WGC Showrunner Award.
Other special prizes:
- Jim Burt Screenwriting Prize: Tony Elliott for Stranger Than You.
- Alex Barris Mentorship Award: Allan Magee.
- WGC Writers Block Award: Jack Blum, Jeremy Hole and Ann MacNaughton.
