A TV spinoff of the epic Star Wars film saga is in the works and will focus on new characters, according to creator George Lucas.

Lucas told the Los Angeles Times that he has begun work on a live-action television series that returns to the Star Wars universe.

However, the central family of his six-part film series will not be included, nor will other familiar faces.

"The Skywalkers aren't in it, and it's about minor characters," Lucas said in an article published Wednesday.

"It has nothing to do with Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader or any of those people. It's completely different. But it's a good idea, and it's going to be a lot of fun to do."

He declined to share further details, but joked that the series would explore "the life of robots."

After releasing a trio of Star Wars films in the late 1970s and early 1980s (Star Wars: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi ), Lucas returned to the series about 15 years later with three more films (The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith), prequels to the originals.

Lucas has also expanded the Star Wars universe through animated television programs, comic books and novels, as well as merchandise like video games and action figures.

Lucas has also been working on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the long-awaited new instalment of the action adventure movie franchise with filmmaking colleague Steven Spielberg and original star Harrison Ford.
