Comedian Whoopi Goldberg says it's a "big ol' thrill" to be named the newest co-host of The View, replacing Rosie O'Donnell, who left after a contentious year with the daytime talk show.

The announcement was made live on Wednesday's show, with the 51-year-old Goldberg trotting down the aisle of a New York studio and slapping hands with the audience.

"I love this show," said Goldberg.  "I love coming on it. I love hanging out with you guys."

Goldberg, a veteran of 150 films, adds considerable star power to the show's lineup of moderators — Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Barbara Walters.

The performer won an Academy Award in 1991 for her supporting role in Ghost, a Grammy for best comedy album in 1986, as well as the prestigious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2001.

The naming of Goldberg ends weeks of speculation about who would fill O'Donnell's chair. Previous reports had mentioned everyone from comedian Kathy Griffiths (My Life On the D List ) to R&B star Brandy.

The Los Angeles Times reported last Friday that Goldberg was already in negotiations.

O'Donnell announced she was leaving this spring. During her brief term, ratings shot up 17 per cent, mostly due to her outspoken presence and public feuding with Hasselbeck over the war in Iraq and another dispute with Donald Trump.

O'Donnell arrived last September to replace Meredith Vieira, who left to co-host NBC's Today show.

A spokesman for The View, entering its 11th season, said it is in "ongoing discussions" with several people to cast another host.

The second new host would continue where Star Jones Reynolds left off. Reynolds departed amid controversy last spring, saying she was forced off the program.

The View, the brainchild of Walters, runs weekdays, concentrating on female issues, guest appearances by celebrities, and segments on health and lifestyles.
