On Wednesday, CBS unveiled a fall season with five new shows, including several with themes that give a new edge to a network seen as rather stodgy.

Among the new shows:

  • Swingtown: starring Molly Parker, about Chicago-area couples navigating the sexual freedom of the 1970s.
  • Cane: starring Jimmy Smits as the head of a powerful Cuban-American family in Florida.
  • Viva Laughlin: a drama about a former gambler who wants to run a casino, starring Lloyd Owen and X-Men star Hugh Jackman. The series contains musical interludes.
  • Moonlight: about a vampire who helps the living.

Only one new comedy is on the CBS list. The Big Bang Theory is about two intellectuals with no social skills who go looking for love.

Kid Nation,a new reality show will give 40 kids 40 days to build a new world in a ghost town in New Mexico.

Jericho started last fall strong for CBS, but like many serialized dramas, lost viewers when it went into hiatus midseason.

The Class and Close to Home also got the boot.

Over at Fox, which releases its full schedule on Thursday, 24 is back for another two years, but the network promised to recreate the show after losing viewers this year.
