Away from Her, Afghanada earn scriptwriting awards

Sarah Polley has won a Canadian Screenwriting Award for best feature film for her script for Away from Her, the movie she wrote and directed based on a short story by Alice Munro.
The winners of the Canadian Screenwriting Awards were named Monday by the Writers Guild of Canada, which represents 1,800 Canadian screenwriters.
Canadian actor Sarah Polley at the debut of Away from Her at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2006. She has won a WGC award for writing the film's script.

The award for radio drama went to Andrew Moodie, Greg Nelson, Adam Pettle and Jason Sherman for episode 4 of Afghanada, an original radio play on CBC Radio One giving a soldier's eye view of the conflict in Afghanistan.
John Doyle and Lisa Porter won the screenwriting award for movies of the week and miniseries for Above and Beyond, which tells the story of the Atlantic Ferry Operation during the Second World War.
Laura Kosterski won the screenwriting award for a half-hour drama series for an episode of Showcase drama Naked Josh titled "Beating the Rap."
Susan Coyne, Bob Martin and Mark McKinney won the award for best one-hour drama for an episode of the black comedy Slings & Arrows titled "That Way Madness Lies."
Brent Butt and Kevin White won the screenwriting award for comedy for an episode of Corner Gas, titled "Outside Joke."
The screenwriting award for documentary went to Barry Stevens, who penned The Bomber's Dream, a History Television presentation about aerial bombing and how it shaped the nature of modern warfare.
Brent Piaskoski won the youth screenwriting award for "Rashomon," an episode of Naturally Sadie, a series shown on Family and Disney channels about a high school student who loves to study and observe animal behaviour.
Kate Barris won in the children and preschool category for her writing for the animated program If the World Were a Village, which was also nominated for a 2006 Gemini Award.
Other awards given by the WGC on Monday:
- WGC Showrunner Award (a showrunner is a writer-producer who manages the creative vision for a TV series): Brad Wright of Stargate Atlantis and Stargate SG-1.
- Alex Barris Mentorship Award for writers who have mentored others: Ilana Frank.
- Jim Burt Screenwriting Prize for new screenwriters with an unproduced script: Ryan Redford for Bone.
- Writers Block Award for service to the WGC: Sondra Kelly and Sugith Varughese.
The awards ceremony was held on April 23 at the Brant House in Toronto and hosted by Gavin Crawford from This Hour Has 22 Minutes, who co-wrote the show with Kyle Tingley.
