Quebec director Jean-Marc Vallée marks his return to French-language cinema with Café de flore, a film concentrating on two stories of love and loneliness with an intriguing twist.

The Montreal-born Vallée's last film in French was the immensely successful C.R.A.Z.Y. in 2005, which dealt with issues of homophobia in 1960s and '70s Quebec. He released the English-language period drama The Young Victoria in 2009.

Much like C.R.A.Z.Y. with its clever use of David Bowie's music, music is central to Café de flore — specifically a French jazz album of the same name featuring various artists.

Vallée spoke to CBC about the film's music and its theme of lost love.
