A hip-hop circus and a Bollywood extravaganza are set for the reopening season of the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto.

The former O'Keefe Centre has been closed for two years for renovation and restoration.

It reopens Oct. 1 with iD, a show co-created by Jeannot Painchaud, founder and artistic director of Montreal's Cirque Éloize and hip-hop choreographer Mourad Merzouki.

The show weaves together hip-hop music, breakdancing and BMX bikes with acrobats and contortionists.

The Merchants of Bollywood, a musical about the history of Indian film industry featuring 40 Bollywood performers will run Nov. 4-14. Choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant, the show brings the glitz and glamour of Bollywood to Toronto.

Dan Brambilla, Sony Centre CEO, announced Wednesday a diverse season of dance, music and performance from around the world, including previously announced marquee shows, Robert Lepage's Eonngata and the Mariinsky Ballet.

The Mariinsky, known in Soviet times as the Kirov Ballet, will perform its signature ballet, Swan Lake, under the direction of Valery Gergiev in an appearance next March.

Dancers from the Mariinsky will also take part in Stars of the 21st Century, which assembles contemporary dance stars from New York, Paris and London in a diverse program.

The dance season features performances from around the world, including:

  • Beijing Friendship Dance Company, with Dream of the Red Chamber.
  • Bayanihan Philippine National Dance Company.
  • Mazowsze, with Music and Dance of Poland.
  • Breakin' Convention, a hip-hop festival from London.

The Christmas program has a family musical — Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical, as well as performances by the Canadian Tenors and A Leahy Family Christmas.

The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony will give two family-friendly concerts meant to introduce children to classical music.

The symphony will also perform Nobuo Uematsu music from the video game Final Fantasy in a program that combines video with live music.

The season also includes single-night performances by Liza Minnelli and the Kodo Drummers.
