Producers Hal Luftig and Scott Sanders are hoping to successfully transfer a revival of the critically lauded 2006 production of Evita from London's Adelphi Theatre to Broadway, tentatively for the 2011-2012 season, according to New York media reports.

Argentine actress Elena Roger won widespread praise for her turn as iconic figure Eva Peron in the British revival, which was directed by Michael Grandage, artistic director of the Donmar Warehouse in London.

The producers are said to be looking for a marquee name to fill the role of Che Guevara in the proposed New York run.

If secured, it will be Broadway's first revival of Evita since the musical's debut in 1979. The original production in London's West End starred Elaine Paige, while the Tony Award-winning production in New York starred Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin.

With music and lyrics by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, Evita tells the story of Argentine actress-turned-first lady and activist Eva (Evita) Peron, second wife of former president Juan Peron. The musical's score features the now-famous song Don't Cry for Me Argentina.

A 1996 film adaptation based on the musical starred Madonna, Antonio Banderas and Jonathan Pryce.

The musical has been staged around the world over the years, including a production planned for this year at Ontario's Stratford Shakespeare Festival.
