(Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)With their respective TV shows both going dark this year, Tony Shalhoub and Anthony LaPaglia are set to make the leap to the stage, co-starring in a madcap comedy on Broadway in 2010.
Shalhoub, who recently ended his acclaimed run on the quirky investigation series Monk, and LaPaglia, whose FBI drama Without a Trace ended earlier this year, will co-star in a new revival of the screwball comedy Lend Me a Tenor, producers announced Thursday.
The 1930s-set Ken Ludwig farce, which debuted in 1989, follows the chaos created when an Italian opera star goes missing ahead of a debut performance with a local troupe in Cleveland. The organizer must scramble to placate everyone from the world-famous tenor's hot-blooded wife to his passionate fans ahead of opening night.
LaPaglia, a veteran of stage and screen, will portray Italian superstar tenor Tito Merelli, with Shalhoub opposite as opera presenter Saunders.
Actor Stanley Tucci will make his Broadway directorial debut with the Lend Me a Tenor, after having helmed movies such as Joe Gould's Secret, The Impostors and Big Night. He last appeared on Broadway in 2002, delivering a Tony-nominated turn in a revival of Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune.
The cast will also include Shalhoub's wife, actress Brooke Adams, as well as Jan Maxwell, Mary Catherine Garrison, Jennifer Laura Thompson and Jay Klaitz.
Lend Me a Tenor will begin previews at New York's Music Box Theatre in March, with opening night on April 4.
