Chaim Topol, the actor famous for the role of Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, has cancelled his appearance in Toronto with the touring show this December because of a shoulder injury.

Topol, the Israeli-born actor best known for the role of the Russian milkman with many daughters, requires long-term treatment for the injury and cannot continue to act, Mirvish Productions said in a press release on Wednesday.

Topol starred in the 1971 film version of Fiddler on the Roof, as well as stage productions in the 1970s and 1980s. He has been on a "farewell tour" with the show throughout the U.S.

Harvey Fierstein, who played the role on Broadway, will replace him. Fierstein has won best actor Tony Awards in New York for his performances in Torch Song Trilogy and Hairspray.

He has also appeared on film in Torch Song Trilogy, Mrs. Doubtfire, Bullets Over Broadway and Independence Day.

Fiddler on the Roof will play Toronto's Canon Theatre from Dec. 8, 2009, to Jan. 10, 2010.
