Twyla Tharp, seen here in 2008, will debut her new musical featuring the music of Frank Sinatra this fall. (Kevin Wolf/Associated Press)Noted choreographer Twyla Tharp is set to debut yet another theatre show inspired by the music of a classic American singer, this time choosing Frank Sinatra for the musical treatment.
Atlanta-based troupe Alliance Theatre has announced it will stage Tharp's new show Come Fly With Me in September.
The musical — created, directed and choreographed by Tharp — deals with the romantic lives of four couples.
It will feature more than a dozen Sinatra tunes, including Pick Yourself Up, Witchcraft and My Way, as well as a 17-piece band that will sit onstage.
Previews will begin in mid-September in advance of the Sept. 23 premiere. The Atlanta run ends Oct. 11, with plans for the show to tour in summer 2010.
Acclaimed for blending modern dance and ballet choreography, Tharp won a Tony Award in 2003 for her musical Movin' Out, which followed a group of friends from the 1960s onward and showcased the music of pop star Billy Joel. It ran for three years on Broadway and toured the U.S. and Canada.
However, her last show inspired by an American music icon didn't fare so well.
The Times They Are A-Changin' — Tharp's coming-of-age musical that incorporated the songs of Bob Dylan — closed less than a month after opening on Broadway in 2006, after receiving a host of negative reviews.
