(Christal Films/Canadian Press)Young People F---ing, the comedy that was a flashpoint in the debate over federal film sponsorship last year, has earned a leading eight nominations for the Canadian Comedy Awards.
The awards, to be presented Oct. 2 in Saint John, released nominations for the best in film, TV and standup comedy on Monday.
Young People F---ing dominated the nominations for film comedy performance, with Josh Dean, Ennis Esmer and Peter Oldring earning nods for best male actor in a film.
Natalie Lisinska, Carly Pope and Kristin Booth, who won a best supporting actress Genie Award for her performance earlier this year, are vying for best female performance.
The film was much talked about in Senate hearings last year as Canadian politicians debated whether a movie with such a provocative title should be allowed to have government funding.
It also earned comedy nominations for best direction for Martin Gero and for best writing in a film.
Daily Show writer Samantha Bee and partner Jason Jones also were named for their performances in Cooper's Camera.
Other films to earn recognition include Boyfriend Latte, Hooked on Speedman and Wild Cherry.
In the TV categories, CBC-TV's This Hour Has 22 Minutes has five nominations, including best writing.
CBC's Rick Mercer Report has a writing nomination, while Alan Park has been recognized for his performance in the final year of Royal Canadian Air Farce's long run.
Other TV shows with multiple nominations include mockumentary sitcom The Jon Dore TV Show with three and Winnipeg-shot Less Than Kind with four.
The nominees for best taped live performance include Debra DiGiovanni from the Halifax Comedy Festival, Laurie Elliot and Jeremy Hotz for the Just for Laughs Gala and Ron Sparks with Comedy Now.
Hotz and DiGiovanni also have nominations for best live standup. Hotz, who has a third nod this year for his performance in What A Miserable Show This Is, took home the prestigious Dave Broadfoot Award in 2008.
The Canadian Comedy Awards are celebrating their 10th year and will be aired later in the season on the Comedy Network.
