Producers of Spring Awakening announced Thursday the Broadway musical will close in January after a two-year run.
The curtain will fall on the production, which won eight Tony Awards, including best musical, on Jan. 18, 2009.
The alt-rock musical, based on Steven Sater's book and set in 19th century Germany, explores a group of teens' sexual awakening. Duncan Sheik wrote the music to accompany Sater's lyrics.
The book is based on a 1891 play of the same name by German playwright Frank Wedekind.
The announcement comes just days after news that long-running Broadway musicals Hairspray and Monty Python's Spamalot will also close in January.
Spring Awakening began its 859-performance run at the Atlantic Theater Company in summer 2006. It moved to Broadway in December of that year.
A North American tour is under way and with a run at Toronto's Canon Theatre scheduled for April-May 2009. Other productions are planned for London, Vienna, Helsinki and Seoul.

The first full-length trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man -- the reboot of the comic-turned-movie trilogy -- has been released. But considering the previous movie franchise ended a mere five years ago and that we've been bombarded with stories about the troubled Broadway musical adaptation since then, this reboot does beg the question: Do we really need to revisit Spider-Man?
