South Pacific scores 4 trophies from Outer Critics Circle

The much-praised revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific scored a leading four trophies at the Outer Critics Circle Awards on Monday, the day before nominations for the prestigious Tony Awards are announced.
The beloved musical was recognized in four categories:
- Outstanding revival of a musical.
- Outstanding director of a musical for Bartlett Sher.
- Outstanding actor in a musical for Paulo Szot.
- Outstanding featured actor in a musical for Danny Burstein.
Two productions inspired by films tied for the outstanding new musical title: Xanadu, based on the 1980 Olivia Newton-John film, and Young Frankenstein, another movie comedy turned musical from Mel Brooks.
August: Osage County was the big winner for plays, with Tracey Letts's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama winning Outer Critics Circle trophies for outstanding new Broadway play, outstanding director of a play for Anna D. Shapiro and outstanding actress in a play for Deanna Dunagan.
The awards are presented annually by journalists covering the New York theatre scene for U.S. and foreign media outside the city.
Other winners include:
- Actress in a musical: Patti LuPone, Gypsy.
- Featured actress in a musical: Laura Benanti, Gypsy.
- Revival of a play: The Homecoming.
- Actor in a play: Kevin Kline, Cyrano de Bergerac.
- Featured actor in a play: James Earl Jones, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
- Featured actress in a play: Laurie Metcalf, November.
- Solo performance prize: Laurence Fishburne, Thurgood.
- Choreographer: Rob Ashford, Cry-Baby The Musical.
- New score: (tie) Adding Machine and Next to Normal.
- New Off-Broadway musical: Adding Machine.
- New Off-Broadway play: Dividing the Estate.
- Set design (play or musical): David Farley, Timothy Bird, Sunday in the Park with George.
- Costume design (play or musical): Katrina Lindsay, Les Liaisons Dangereuses
- John Gassner Award: Liz Flahive, From Up Here.
This year's winners will receive their awards at a ceremony at Sardi's Restaurant on May 22.
Letts drama wins with N.Y. critics, too
On Monday, August: Osage County also picked up the best play title from the New York Drama Critics' Circle. The group selected biographical rock 'n' roll tale Passing Strange as the year's best musical.
The long-running association, comprised of critics covering Broadway for New York-based papers, magazines and wire services, chose not to present a trophy for best foreign play this year.
It will celebrate its two 2008 winners at a private ceremony May 19.
