Archie's getting married. Who will it be - Betty or Veronica?

At first, I thought it must be some kind of cockamamie rumour: Archie’s getting hitched? How could that be? In addition to living in a state of perpetual adolescence for the past 67 years, the redheaded Riverdale resident has also built a reputation as one of the most commitment-phobic bachelors in pop culture – rivaled in his ladies man, player ways by only George Clooney.

When I did a search on the Archie Comics’ blog earlier this morning, it looks like the rumours really are true: an entry featuring a picture of a sparkly diamond being placed on an anonymous finger also bears the words “The Proposal,” and suggests Archie will finally stop his dithering and settle down with one lucky lady.

According to USA Today, the “Proposal” issue, which is set to hit shelves on Sept. 8, will show Archie Andrews popping the question to one of his two long-suffering girlfriends, either the raven-haired Veronica Lodge or the sunny blonde Betty Cooper.

Which girl will he choose? This love triangle has been playing out for decades now, and I still have no clue which woman Archie truly loves. I have to confess that when I feasted on Archie Digests as a child, I always had a secret preference for Veronica, in spite of the fact that she always had a snotty edge (Veronica was a Heather and a Mean Girl before either even existed). She just struck me as more vibrant, complex and challenging than the perpetually smiling, vaguely doormat-ish girl-next-door, Betty (who was Jennifer Aniston before she ever existed).
