The Dixie Chicks will play the Saddledome this summer in a headline performance of the Calgary Stampede, organizers announced.

In the last few years, concert appearances have been rare for the Grammy-winning country trio, who have been involved in solo projects as well as raising their respective families.

The group will perform July 12 at the Saddledome, towards the end of the 2013 Calgary Stampede, which runs July 5–14.

“The Dixie Chicks are an incredibly talented and passionate country music group,” Stampede programming vice-president Paul Rosenberg said in a statement.

“The Calgary Stampede is honoured to be one of their first performances after being on hiatus for five years.”

American country singer Tim McGraw was previously announced for the Stampede’s 2013 Virgin Mobile concert series.

The bestselling female group of all time, the Dixie Chicks won two Grammys for their last album, 2006's Taking the Long Way, and their hit track Not Ready to Make Nice. They were boycotted by country stations throughout the U.S. after singer Natalie Maines made remarks critical of the Iraq War in 2003. Not Ready to Make Nice was a cheeky reply to those who ostracized them.

In December, Maines released a cover version of Pink Floyd’s Mother for the documentary West of Memphis: Voices for Justice. She had begun writing new songs with bandmates Emily Robison and Martie McGuire in 2011.

The Dixie Chicks are also planning a few other Canadian stops, with concert dates planned in July at the Cavendish Beach Festival in P.E.I. and at the Craven Country Jamboree in Craven, Sask.
