Gaming giant Ubisoft is tackling diversity in its newest release, a fresh, Montreal-made instalment in the popular Assassin's Creed franchise.
The game firm unveiled Assassin's Creed III at a large warehouse in Montreal's Griffintown neighbourhood on Tuesday.
The title introduces a new hero to the acclaimed series: Connor Kenway, who is of English and Mohawk descent.
Assassin's Creed III was created as an open-world game, in which the player can travel at will. (Ubisoft)Assassin's Creed III was created by a multicultural team at Ubisoft and the character was a challenge the developers were eager to take on.
"We have people from all over and we wanted with our hero to reflect diversity as well," said Alex Hutchinson, the game's creative director.
"There are not a lot of minorities in media, let alone in video games."
The character's Native background is a cultural detail that appeals to game fan and Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price, whose mother is a former chief of the Ulkatcho First Nation in British Columbia.
"I'm only quarter, I'm not half, but I do feel a little bit of a connection," said Price, who is working with Ubisoft on a charity project.
As with previous editions, Assassin's Creed III is an adult-oriented game where players travel through historic eras and must use tactics — including stealth or violence — to achieve goals. Set against the backdrop of the American Revolution, the latest title was released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles, with a debut for PC computers and the Wii system forthcoming in November.
