Comedian Phyllis Diller, who died Aug. 20 at the age of 95, was famous for her riotous stand-up routines, which often took aim at relationships, parenting and the aging process.

While her jokes were often self-deprecating, they were also quite progressive. Diller rose to prominence during the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, poking fun at marriage and housework at a time when popular culture in general viewed domesticity as blissful and sacred.

With her wild hair and even wilder outfits, Diller became a regular on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Gong Show and Hollywood Squares.

Her acerbic wisecracks — always delivered with that trademark cackle — inspired female comics such as Joan Rivers and Roseanne Barr.
