Drake, Rihanna lead race for MTV Video Music Awards

Rihanna and Drake are both collaborators and rivals after each earning five nominations for the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards.
MTV announced the contenders for its music video celebration on Monday. The awards ceremony is set for Sept. 6 in Los Angeles.
Rihanna is in the running for best video and best female video for We Found Love, but the Barbados-born singer is also featured in Drake’s hit track Take Care.
Take Care earned Toronto rapper Drake nominations for best video and best male video. Meanwhile his tune HYFR, featuring Lil Wayne, is a competitor in the hip hop video category.
Last year’s big winner, Katy Perry, remains near the front of the pack with four nominations, including video of the year for Wide Awake and best female video for Part of Me.
Australian singer Gotye, who had a breakout hit with Somebody That I Used to Know, is nominated for best video for the song.
Rapper M.I.A. has three nominations, including best video for Bad Girls.
Mission, B.C.'s Carly Rae Jepsen is up for best new artist honours for her ubiquitous tune Call Me Maybe. Her label-mate, Stratford, Ont.’s Justin Bieber, is vying for best male video and best pop video for Boyfriend.
Frank Ocean, Chris Brown and Usher also scored nods for best male video.
Toronto-based K’naan is nominated for best video with a message for Is Anybody Out There featuring Nelly Furtado and Duck Sauce is up for best direction for Big Bad Wolf.
