Buoyed by the opening week success of The Amazing Spider-Man reboot, Hollywood studio Sony Pictures has confirmed two more instalments are on the way.

"The Amazing Spider-Man is the first instalment in a movie trilogy that will explore how our fave hero's journey was shaped by the disappearance of his parents," Sony said in a statement.

The next film is tentatively slated to debut in May 2014.

The Amazing Spider-Man's North American theatrical debut on July 3 set a U.S. box office record for a Tuesday opening ($35 million US). The action-packed blockbuster followed with a take of $23.4 million US on Wednesday, the U.S. Independence Day holiday.

British actor Andrew Garfield's turn as the quippy web-slinging hero and his nerdier alter-ego, Peter Parker, was one of the summer's most anticipated films. Directed by Marc Webb, the movie's star-studded cast also includes Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Dennis Leary, Martin Sheen and Sally Field.

The latest film is Sony's fourth in its Spider-Man franchise, which previously starred Tobey Maguire and was directed by Sam Raimi.

The success of Spider-Man follows that of The Avengers, the comic-inspired ensemble film released in the spring. Yet another superhero returns to the cinema later this month with the release of The Dark Knight Rises, the final title of director Christopher Nolan and actor Christian Bale's recent Batman trilogy.
