Screen princesses become bold warriors

Most little girls go through a stage when the pink-clad princesses they see onscreen are all they aspire to.

But a new trend in movie-making is creating heroines who are strong, self-reliant and far less concerned with their looks.

As CBC’s Eli Glasner reports, Pixar’s animated film Brave stars this new kind of girl: a princess named Merida who would rather shoot arrows than sit pretty.

It follows such recent films as Snow White and the Huntsmen and Mirror Mirror, where the fairy-tale protagonist is no damsel in distress.

It's about time little girls had someone resourceful to watch onscreen, say child psychologists.
