Max Hastings, a British historian, journalist and editor known for his writing about the Second World War, has won the $100,000 US Pritzker Military Library’s Literature Award.

Hastings, 66, is a former war correspondent and editor-in-chief for the Daily Telegraph.

His books on the Second World War include Bomber Command, Overlord: D-Day and the Battle for Normandy, Das Reich: the March of the Second SS Panzer Division Through France and Inferno: The World At War, 1939-1945.

He wrote about the British battle for the Falklands, both as a war correspondent and in a non-fiction book, and about the Korean War. He has also presented historical documentaries for the BBC.

The award, sponsored by the Tawani Foundation of Chicago, is given for lifetime achievement in military writing. Previous winners include James M. McPherson and Rick Atkinson.
