Indian film icon Amitabh Bachchan is recovering at home after recent abdominal surgery, according to his blog.

"Just discharged from hospital and am back home in familiar surroundings, gently taking in all that now engulfs me, " the 69-year-old wrote on his blog Thursday.

Bachchan, one of India’s most popular actors, had surgery Feb. 11 in Mumbai. His family reported that the surgery went well and he was recovering normally.

But his stay was extended after he continued to experience pain, prompting a torrent of well-wishes from fans. He was released Thursday from hospital.

"The surgery discomfort and soreness persists, but will take a while to finally erase itself from the pain glands, but in all, apart from a sluggish movement, God's grace and prayers …have put me back on track again," he tweeted.

Bachchan is a regular user of Twitter and, during his hospital stay, also kept fans up to date through his blog.

In an earlier blog posts, he called all his health problems "a legacy of the past, in particular, the accident of 1982 during Coolie." During that movie, he performed his own stunts and suffered a fall that ruptured his spleen and landed him in hospital for several months.

Bachchan had surgery for an intestinal condition at the same Mumbai hospital in 2005. He was admitted to a hospital with abdominal pains again in 2008.

He will make his Hollywood debut in a new film adaptation of The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, due to be released in December 2012.
