Hugh Jackman, who just concluded his hit one-man show on Broadway, will return to the stage as Harry Houdini.

The Australian actor will work with Oscar-winner Aaron Sorkin, who will pen the musical about the famed magician. It is tentatively set for a 2013-14 season debut on Broadway.

"I have been deeply fascinated by the life of Harry Houdini since I was young, and in many ways I've been preparing for this role my whole life,” Jackson said in a statement.

Houdini, a Hungarian-born American, made his name as a magician and escape artist in the early 1900s. He was known for freeing himself from handcuffs, jail, straitjackets and, later, water-filled containers, cages and nailed crates.

Wicked's Stephen Schwartz is composing the score for the Houdini musical, while Jack O'Brien, who helmed Hairspray and The Full Monty, is signed to direct.

Jackman became a Broadway star with The Boy from Oz, balancing his stage time with Hollywood roles in films like The Prestige (in which he played a magician), Swordfish and the X-Men series. He is also scheduled for upcoming screen roles as Jean Valjean in Les Misérables and showman P.T. Barnum in The Greatest Show on Earth.

His song and dance-filled one-man show Hugh Jackman: Back on Broadway was a success in San Francisco and Toronto before going on to New York. The ended its limited run on New Year’s Day after becoming one of the biggest hits of the 2011 season and setting a record for the highest ticket price on Broadway ($190.65 US).
