Kennedys up for Producers Guild award

Bridesmaids, Dragon Tattoo and Hugo among film award-nominees

Canadian-backed series The Kennedys has a nomination for best in long-form television from the Producers Guild of America, which announced its nominees for 2011's best film and television on Tuesday.

The Kennedys, the controversial miniseries about the American political family, was produced by Montreal’s Muse Entertainment and won four Emmys in September.

The comedy Bridesmaids, crime thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and 3D kids adventure Hugo are among the 10 nominees for best film. Others nominated are:

Silent film The Artist.
Family drama The Descendants.
Civil rights era tale The Help.
Political thriller The Ides of March.
Romantic fantasy Midnight in Paris.
Baseball comedy-drama Moneyball.
Wartime epic War Horse.

Kathleen Kennedy and Steven Spielberg have double nominations, as their pictures War Horse and The Adventures of Tintin are both up for PGA Awards. Tintin, which they co-produced with Peter Jackson, is a nominee in the animated films category. Other animated contenders include:

Cars 2.
Kung Fu Panda 2.
Puss in Boots.
Rango.

The guild will also honour Spielberg with the David O. Selznick Achievement Award, in recognition of his “genius, imagination and fearlessness in the world of feature film entertainment.”

Canadians Jon Cassar, Michael Prupas and Jamie Paul Rock are among the producers who earned nominations for their work on The Kennedys series. Shot in Toronto, the miniseries was dropped by the U.S. History Channel — which had originally commissioned it — amid charges it was inaccurate. The series eventually aired on ReelzChannel in the U.S. and on Shaw's History channel in Canada.

The television contenders are:

Long-form TV: Cinema Verite, Downton Abbey, Mildred Pierce, The Kennedys,Too Big To Fail.
TV drama series: Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, Game of Thrones, The Good Wife, Mad Men.
TV comedy: 30 Rock, The Big Bang Theory, Glee, Modern Family, Parks and Recreation.

The awards ceremony is scheduled for Jan. 21 in Los Angeles.
