A quirky Montreal architectural landmark could be upstaging some of the world's most famous buildings in the race to be immortalized as a popular toy.
Habitat 67 was in top spot Monday, with more than 86,000 votes, in a competition to determine the next Lego architecture set.
That put it ahead of Paris's Eiffel Tower, Rome's Coliseum and the United States Capitol Building in Washington D.C.
Habitat 67, an integrated series of blocks of housing units near downtown Montreal's waterfront, was designed by Israeli-Canadian architect Moshe Safdie.
The structure was built as a pavilion for Expo 67, the world's fair held 44 years ago in Montreal. It was declared a historic site by Quebec in 2009.
Lego, which makes popular plastic construction block toy sets, has released a number of sets under its "architecture" series since 2008.© The Canadian Press, 2011
