The National Arts Centre Orchestra launched its national tour Wednesday night, with 16 year-old Jan Lisiecki as special guest soloist.

Critics have been stunned by the talents of the Calgary-born pianist and he was described by BBC Music magazine as "the most complete pianist of his age."

Lisiecki had his orchestral debut at the age of nine and has since enthralled more than a hundred audiences all over the world.

He first met NAC music director Pinchas Zukerman at age 10 at a masterclass the NAC offered during its tour of Western Canada. He has since attended the NAC’s Summer Music Institute and signed a contract with Deutsche Grammophon.

CBC's Vik Adhopia spoke to Lisiecki as he began a tour of Atlantic Canada with the Ottawa-based NACO.

The orchestra's tour began in Newfoundland and it will give nine concerts in the four Atlantic provinces over the next two weeks.
